The Carolina Panthers finalized their initial 53-man roster on Sunday, August 30, roughly 90 minutes after the NFL’s 6:00 p.m. cutdown deadline, closing the book on a training camp and preseason that reshaped several position groups on both sides of the ball.

The Big Moves

General manager Dan Morgan’s group didn’t just trim the roster — they reworked it. Carolina swung a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers, sending a 2028 sixth-round pick to Los Angeles in exchange for defensive tackle TeRah Edwards, adding immediate depth up front.

The team also released 10 vested veterans, ending their time in Carolina: wide receiver David Moore, defensive tackle Elijah Garcia, offensive lineman Jake Curhan, cornerback Robert Rochell, safety Isaiah Simmons, outside linebacker Cam Gill, offensive lineman Ja’Tyre Carter, quarterback Kyle Trask, tight end James Mitchell, and outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon.

Two notable names landed on injured reserve with designations to return: running back Trevor Etienne and linebacker Bam Martin-Scott, meaning both could rejoin the active roster later in the season once eligible. Cornerback Tyrek Funderburk was waived with an injury designation.

Health Concerns Up Front

Perhaps the most significant subplot of cutdown weekend involves Carolina’s offensive and defensive lines. Right tackle Taylor Moton was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list, while left tackle Ikem Ekwonu and defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton were placed on reserve/physically unable to perform. None of the three will be available for the start of the regular season, forcing the Panthers to lean on depth pieces earlier than planned.

Up front, that means rookie first-round pick Monroe Freeling and veteran Rasheed Walker are set to handle tackle duties, with Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis at guard and Luke Fortner taking over at center. Fifth-round rookie Sam Hecht will back up Fortner, while Chandler Zavala, Stone Forsythe, Brady Christensen, and Albert Reese IV round out the line’s reserves.

Quarterback Room Holds Form

At quarterback, there were no surprises: Bryce Young, Kenny Pickett, and Haynes King all made the cut as expected. Young enters a pivotal third season with his long-term future with the franchise very much tied to how the offense performs, while Pickett — signed as an experienced backup — provides insurance behind him. King, who flashed in the Hall of Fame Game before suffering a hamstring injury, held onto his roster spot despite the health scare.
